About Us

Imambargah Colonel Maqbool Hussain is the central and most renowned Imambargah in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. It is one of the oldest Imambargahs in the city. Named after its founder, the late Lt. Col. Maqbool Hussain Zaidi, the Imambargah was formed in 1947 i.e. just after the partition of India - Pakistan when Col. Maqbool Hussain & family migrated to Pakistan. It became the first Imambargah to introduce mourning processions in the city and conduct organised Majalis. The Imambargah is located in the old city on the busy Gordon College Road and has since become a major point of reference for that area.

The building of Imambargah is also one of the oldest buildings in the down town. The same has been maintained almost in the same form even after decades of its original construction.

Yearly majalis are held at the Imambargah during the first ten days of Muharram (first month of Muslim calendar), 18-20 Safar (following month) and 19-21 Ramadan. Processions are brought out on 7, 9 and 10th of Muharram (Ashura) and 20 Safar. The 10th of Muharram procession taken out from the Imambargah is the principal procession of the twin cities of Rawalpindi & Islamabad.

The Imambargah was run by its founder until his death in 1969. Thereafter, its administration has been looked after by his widow and his sons --- Mehdi Alamdar Hussain, Muhammad Iftikhar Hussain and Hashim Vaqar Hussain.
